Los AngelesConnection to Humanities
Los Angeles is the biggest city in California, and the second largest city in the united states. With over 3.8 million people, LA has a wide range of diverse cultures. It has a bustling nightlife, famous entertainers, prestigious colleges, and much more. These all allow for Los Angeles to be one of the worlds largest "economic engines" in the United States. Just walking in one of LA's many museums can teach you so much about its rich cultures.
Manhattan
Connection to Humanities

Manhattan is the most densely populated county in the United States with a population over 2 million. Manhattan has some of the most varied culture in the world. It is home to a majority of the major radio, television, magazine, news, and other media outlets in the US. Along with a plethora of landmarks, Manhattan attracts a large variety of visitors every year. Manhattan has also been the home to a wide range of American cultural movements, such as the Harlem Renaissance, as well as the pop art movement, Andy Warhol, and Studio 54. It also has some of the most famous museums in the US as well as Broadway shows.
Assumptions/Stereotypes
Many people think that by going to Los Angeles, you are either going to get shot by gangsters, become rich and famous, or meet someone rich and famous. Being one of the largest cities in the US your odds of meeting said famous people is rather slim, and so is the chance that one of them will fall in love with you.
When people think of Manhattan, several things come to mind. Some being that all New Yorkers are bitter, rude, think they are better than everyone, and are always in a rush.
Similarities
Both Los Angeles and New York are two of the biggest producers of talent such as movie stars and musicians. They are also the largest commercial, financial, and business centers in the world. Both economies are also driven by international trade
Differences
Manhattan is more densely populated then LA. Along with the large number of people, Manhattan is more compact than LA. Los Angeles is more spread out horizontally while Manhattan seems to stack one thing on top of another, vertically. A large majority of people in Manhattan rely heavily on public transportation rather than cars, while many in Los Angeles rely on their cars.
Questioning
I know that both Manhattan and Los Angeles are some of the worlds largest polluters, I would like to know what each city is doing to reduce their levels of contribution.
Classmate
I learned from Carolyne Sandine that Yosemite National Park was one of the first wilderness parks in the United States.
