Week 2 Project 2b - M.H. de Young Museum

How the M.H. de Young Museum connects to my study of humanities.
The M.H. de Young Museum houses a wide array of collections ranging from African art, Oceaninc art, American paintings, textiles, and sculptures. The museum is an extraordinary place that can teach us about the cultures of our past and the traditions of our ancestors.

Observation
The de Young museum has a very modern exterior made of copper, which they expect to oxidize and take on a greenish tone, as well as a texture that mimics the nearby eucalyptus trees. It was designed to blend with the natural surroundings that encompass it in Golden Gate Park. Along the northeast corner, there is a 144-foot tower that spirals from the ground floor of the museum to the skyline.

Interpretation
The de Young Museum is about connecting everyday people with our past. It's about opening their eyes to the wonderful world of art. It brings people from all over the world together to witness these spectacular works of art that they might not have ever gotten the chance to see.

Judgement
I chose the de Young Museum because I myself have never been there before, but felt it was important to open my mind to new ideas and places. It is a place that combines historic architecture, photography, painting, weavings, and sculpture, all in one place for the world to view.

Questioning
I read that the museum was rebuilt and completed in 2005 to much controversy because of the design and location. I would like to know what inspired the architects and how they came up with their designs.

Classmate
I learned that Mike Becerra is also majoring in business, so we both share the frustrations that come from this. I think that this is related to our class because a majority of our lives are impacted by business. Every store we go to, every restaurant, and every bank we go to are all businesses. Business in a way forms our culture and has a lot to do with our history.
