Week 1 Project 1b

  • Paulo Freire was a believer of what is called liberation theology. Liberation theology is a part of Christianity that focuses on the "origin of sin" and the value of talents given to Christians by God, such as literacy and science.
  • Freire was involved in teaching 300 sugarcane workers to read and write in only 45 days in a response to the law that one must be literate to vote in presidential elections.
  • He was known for the concept of "banking". This was the idea that teachers "deposit" knowledge into the "depositories" (students). The students then memorize and repeat the curriculum taught to them. He considers knowledge to be a gift that can only be awarded to individuals that believe they are more knowledgeable than other individuals they believe know nothing.
